We'll see you on November 19th for two hours of challenging contras, followed by a dinner break and three more hours of dancing to this amazing talent. We'll be joined by one of New York States finest fiddlers, Tim Ball, the amazing guitarist Helen Kuhar and caller's Maia McCormick and Sunny Lawerence!
For folks who have not attended a challenging contras session before, this is a great way to progress from beginner to intermediate dancer!
Tim Ball’s solo fiddle album Upstate Crossroads was the No. 1 album of January 2023 on the FAI Folk DJ chart. Helen Kuhar is rapidly establishing themself as an in-demand guitarist and singer in Boston’s vibrant Irish and contra dance music scenes. When the two met at an Irish session in Ithaca, NY in mid-2022, their musical chemistry was immediate—they quickly discovered that they shared an affinity for fiddle tunes from Celtic-influenced cultures from both sides of the Atlantic, a passion for working out tight, energetic arrangements, and a feel for the nuances of groove that can only come from years of contra dancing.
Maia is nationally recognized caller who calls around the Northeast and beyond, at festivals, dance camps/weekends, and regular dances alike (including, to name a few: Queer Contra Dance Camp, ESC Week at Pinewoods, Youth Dance Weekend, Dawn Dance, LCFD Spring Dance Camp, and the NEFFA festival).
As a choreographer, she strives to write dances that are both compelling and idiomatic. Her dances have made it into some other people’s collections, and have been called as far afield as California and Alaska.
Sunny is calling their first half a dance in Brooklyn as a graduate of our caller academy earlier this year!
