A Contra Dance for All

  • Camp Friendship 339 8th Street Brooklyn, NY, 11215 United States (map)

It’s been a long summer break but we’re so excited to be back on the dance floor! Join us for live music from some of New York City’s finest musicians in our Some Assembly Required Trio, and a split caller bill, with our very own Carter North joined by Western Mass’s Julian Blechner. Admission with a college ID is free for this dance!

Matthew Christian and Matt Diaz rocking the dance floor at Flurry with drummer Joe DePalo!

The Some Assembly Required Trio brings the energy of NYC's best musicians to the Brooklyn Contra stage. Headlined by Matthew Christian's Irish fiddling, you never know who'll show up, from folks fresh of the Broadway or Grand Ol Opry stage to a harmonious cello or a trombone playing mandolin picker.

This week Matthew Christian's signature busker's fiddle sound is joined by long time collaborator and Scottish guitarist Matt Diaz, all underscored by Brian Tracey on the drums. Together, they'll bring joyus, dynamic, interpretations of traditional Appalachian and Irish tunes to help you whirl away the night.

Julian Blechner is a seasoned contra and set dance caller based in Western Massachusetts. He has been calling dances since 2011, from festivals like the New England Folk Festival and Flurry to series dances of all sizes from Maine to the Middle Atlantic. Julian enjoys calling for all skill levels of dancers, and specializes in creating fun evenings with varied and engaging choreography for whatever the crowd is up for! He brings a cheerful, friendly attitude with clear, concise teaching and prompting.
